Volvo is recalling certain trucks after discovering an issue with a steering component.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, Volvo is recalling nearly 2,000 model year 2024 VHD, VNL and VNR trucks. In these vehicles, the fastener that connects two steering components, the pitman arm and draglink, may be loose. This can cause the connection to fail and result in a loss of steering control, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and tighten castle nuts and install new cotter pins, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Dec. 4.

Owners may contact Volvo Trucks’ customer service at 1-800-528-6586. Volvo Trucks’ number for this recall is RVXX2311. NHTSA’s number for this recall is 23V-690.

The recall population is vehicles built between July 21, 2023 and Sept. 9, 2023, when improper torque may have been used on the castellated nut on the pitman arm to the drag link. Drivers may detect excessive play/looseness or vibration in steering. Failure of the cotter pin or loosening of the nut may be detected during pre-trip inspections.

Volvo was first made aware of the possible defect on Sept. 18 by the company’s product safety office. According to NHTSA recall documents, there have been no accidents or injuries related to this issue. There also have been no warranty claims, field reports or customer complaints associated with it.
