There’s no way other way to say it.

Diesel and gasoline prices have been outrageous in 2022.

But, like many things, some states have it better than others at the pump.

Zutobi, an online driver’s education resource, recently released its list of states with the cheapest and most expensive gasoline. The report did not include diesel prices.

In 2021, Zutobi released a U.S. gas index. Because of the recent and rapid fluctuation of the market, this year’s analysis included the biggest and smallest increase in gas prices.

Only three cents separated the top three spots on the list.

Missouri ranked as the cheapest state for gas, after coming in third last year. Missouri’s average price per gallon was $3.78, according to the Zutobi list. Missouri was also the best state in terms of miles traveled for $50 (331 miles). That mileage was based on traveling in a Ford F-150 pickup truck, America’s best-selling passenger vehicle in history, Zutobi said.

Kansas jumped from seventh last year to second this year with an average price of $3.80 per gallon, while Oklahoma, Arkansas and Maryland tied for third with a price of $3.81 per gallon.

The West Coast typically sees higher gas and diesel prices, and this list reflected that trend for gas.

California checked in with the highest price per gallon at $5.91, which is nearly $2 higher than 2021. An increase of more than $1 dollar put Nevada in second on the list of most expensive states. Hawaii, which was second this past year, dropped to third at $5.16 per gallon.

Indiana, Minnesota and Alaska experienced the smallest change in gas increase over the past 12 months, and the biggest changes compared to last year came in California, Alaska and Utah.
