Diesel prices continue to rise across the U.S.

For the third week in a row, the average price for a gallon of diesel fuel across the U.S. has gone up, according to the federal Energy Information Administration.

According the April 22 report from EIA, the U.S. national average price for diesel fuel went up 2.9 cents to $3.147 per gallon. The average price rose in all regions, but the leader was in the Rocky Mountain region, where the average price went up 6.1 cents from last Monday.

The average price in the West Coast region without California went up 5.7 cents per gallon from last Monday.

The average price in California was pushed up to barely above $4 per gallon. Only in the Gulf Coast region did the average price for a gallon of diesel fuel stay below $3.

Following are the average prices for diesel fuel by region as reported by the EIA for Monday:

• U.S. – $3.147, up 2.9 cents.
• East Coast – $3.174, up 2.1 cents.
• New England – $3.217, up 1.2 cents.
• Central Atlantic – $3.37, up 2.8 cents.
• Lower Atlantic – $3.033, up 1.8 cents.
• Midwest – $3.042, up 3.2 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.917, up 1.8 cents.
• Rocky Mountain – $3.143, up 6.1 cents.
• West Coast – $3.696, up 4.5 cents.
• West Coast without California – $3.309, up 5.7 cents.
• California – $4.003, up 3.6 cents.

According to ProMiles, the national average U.S. retail price for diesel fuel on Monday, April 22, rose 2.7 cents.

ProMiles, the software company that maintains the websites ProMiles.com and TruckMiles.com, offers its own weekly fuel price information. The company’s fuel price data are presented in the same format used by the EIA in the agency’s weekly reports. The prices include a national average as well as regional averages, and comparisons to the previous week and the previous year.

A key difference between the EIA and ProMiles reporting is the type and number of fueling stations the company surveys in order to calculate its averages. While EIA surveys 400 truck stops and convenience stores nationwide, ProMiles uses its direct feed from thousands of truck stops to develop its averages.

The largest price increase was in the West Coast region not including California, where the average cost for a gallon of diesel fuel went up 7.1 cents.

• East Coast – $3.128, up 2.2 cents.
• New England – $3.163, up one-fifth of a cent.
• Central Atlantic – $3.321, up 2.7 cents.
• Lower Atlantic – $3.017, up 2.4 cents.
• Midwest – $2.988, up 2.3 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.903, up 2.2 cents.
• Rocky Mountain – $3.088, up 5.7 cents.
• West Coast – $3.491, up 4.9 cents.
• West Coast less California – $3.213, up 7.1 cents.
• California – $3.898, up 4.4 cents.

AAA reported a national average price per gallon for diesel fuel at $3.078 for Monday, April 22.

A week previous, the price was $3.067.

A month previous, AAA reported $3.019 per gallon of diesel fuel and a year ago $3.035 per gallon.

The highest recorded average price for diesel was $4.845 per gallon on July 17, 2008, according to AAA.
