Average price for diesel in U.S. drops another 1.5 cents

The average price for a gallon of diesel fuel across the U.S. dropped 1.5 cents, according to the weekly report issued for Monday, June 3, by the Energy Information Administration.

Last week the U.S. average dropped 1.2 cents from the previous Monday report. This is the third consecutive week the average U.S. price had decreased.

The U.S. average on June 3 was 14.9 cents lower than one year ago.

The Gulf Coast region had the lowest average price at $2.875 per gallon. California had the highest price, at $4.109 per gallon.

Following are the average prices for diesel fuel by region as reported by the EIA for Monday:

• U.S. – $3.136, down 1.5 cents.
• East Coast – $3.153, down 1.1 cents.
• New England – $3.219, down three-fifths of a cent.
• Central Atlantic – $3.344, down 1.6 cents.
• Lower Atlantic – $3.011, down nine-tenths of a cent.
• Midwest – $3.026, down 1.2 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.875, down 1.8 cents.
• Rocky Mountain – $3.163, down 1.8 cents.
• West Coast – $3.76, down 2.2 cents.
• West Coast without California – $3.32, down 1.8 cents.
• California – $4.109, down 2.5 cents.

The national average U.S. retail price for diesel fuel on Monday, June 3, dropped 1.3 cents from the previous week, according to ProMiles.

The average price for California decreased nearly a nickel per gallon, according to ProMiles.

ProMiles, the software company that maintains the websites ProMiles.com and TruckMiles.com, offers its own weekly fuel price information. The company’s fuel price data are presented in the same format used by the EIA in the agency’s weekly reports. The prices include a national average as well as regional averages, and comparisons to the previous week and the previous year.

A key difference between the EIA and ProMiles reporting is the type and number of fueling stations the company surveys in order to calculate its averages. While EIA surveys 400 truck stops and convenience stores nationwide, ProMiles uses its direct feed from thousands of truck stops to develop its averages.

Following are the average prices by region as reported by the ProMiles.com:

• U.S. – $3.048, down 1.3 cents.
• East Coast – $3.126, down 1.5 cents.
• New England – $3.171, up four-fifths of a cent.
• Central Atlantic – $3.323, down 1.3 cents.
• Lower Atlantic – $3.013, down 1.8 cents.
• Midwest – $2.99, down 1.2 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.885, down 1.2 cents.
• Rocky Mountain – $3.143, down 1.9 cents.
• West Coast – $3.61, down 2.9 cents.
• West Coast less California – $3.276, down 1.9 cents.
• California – $4.059, down 4.7 cents.

AAA reported a national average price per gallon for diesel fuel at $3.083 for Monday, June 3.

A week previous, the price was 1.3 cents higher, $3.096.

A month previous, AAA reported the same, $3.103 per gallon of diesel fuel, and a year ago $3.211 per gallon.

The highest recorded average price for diesel was $4.845 per gallon on July 17, 2008, according to AAA.
