Truck rental group asks FMCSA to extend its ELD waiver to December

The Truck Renting and Leasing Association, Inc., is requesting another exemption from the mandate on electronic logging devices for commercial trucks rented for 30 days or fewer.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is now accepting comments on the exemption request, which published in today’s edition of The Federal Register.

TRALA’s request asks for a waiver until Dec. 31. The deadline to submit comments on the request is April 12.

In its petition for the request, TRALA cites ongoing concerns over a lack of interoperability between whatever ELD platform a rental truck may be using, and the device that a customer or motor carrier may be using.

FMCSA already granted a similar request from TRALA for a limited waiver from ELDs for commercial truck rentals lasting 30 days or less. That waiver is scheduled to expire on April 19. In its request for an extended waiver, the organization says the current 90 day window “is not sufficient to address the ELD problems” occurring between vendors and customers looking to rent a truck short-term.

“This request, if granted, would provide rental-vehicle owners, carriers, and drivers with additional time to develop compliance strategies for dealing with the unique issues relating to the use of ELDs in short-term rental vehicles,” FMCSA’s summary states.
