Retired truck driver among fatalities in Las Vegas shooting

A retired truck driver was among the 58 people killed after a gunman opened fire at a country music festival on Sunday, Oct. 1, in Las Vegas. Nearly 500 others were reported injured.

Brett Schwanbeck, 61, of Bullhead City, Ariz., died from a head wound sustained in the incident, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

According to a Facebook post from Teamsters Local 104 in Arizona, Schwanbeck was a member.

“Brett was loved by all and had stayed in contact with his brothers and sisters from ABF,” the Teamsters Local 104 wrote.

Schwanbeck had been attending the country concert with his fiancée, Anna Orozco, the Review-Journal reported. Orozco escaped unharmed.

He is survived by two sons, a daughter, his fiancée and five grandchildren.

His son, Shawn Schwanbeck, described him as an avid outdoorsman.

“He liked to get lost out in the middle of the woods,” Shawn Schwanbeck told the Review-Journal. “My dad was the funnest guy in the world to be around.”

Investigators are still trying to determine the motive of the shooter, Stephen Paddock, who took his own life. The incident is considered the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
