A $9.9 million project will focus on three commuter bridges in Erie County, N.Y.

The Fillmore Avenue and Grider Street bridges over State Highway 33 in Buffalo as well as the bridge carrying State Highway 5 over the Eighteen Mile Creek in Evans are being rehabilitated to enhance safety and improve driving conditions.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation, these vital commuter routes serve more than 25,000 vehicles per day.

“The rehabilitation of these three bridges in Erie County will help us create a more resilient transportation network that better serves residents and visitors to Western New York and will further sustain the tremendous momentum of investment we are already seeing throughout the Buffalo area,” NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said.

The bridge decks and joints will be replaced on both the Filmore Avenue and Grider Street bridges over the Kensington Expressway. The Filmore Avenue structure was built in 1965, while the Grider Street overpass opened in 1968. Steel repairs, bridge pier rehabilitation and rail upgrades also will take place.

Bridge joints will be replaced on the bridge over Eighteen Mile Creek, which was built in 1931.

Repairs on the Grider Street bridge began on Monday, June 3. State transportation officials said the bridge is expected to reopen to traffic in mid-November. The posted detour is from East Delevan Avenue to William Gaiter Parkway to Kensington Avenue.

Work on the State Highway 5 bridge is scheduled to begin this summer. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction with a speed limit of 40 mph.

A closure of the Fillmore Avenue bridge is anticipated in the spring of 2025, with completion expected by the end of that calendar year. Motorists are advised to use the posted detour during this closure.

The work on these three bridges is a separate project from the Kensington Expressway Project. LL
