LLN (7/2/19) –
Federal officials issue a holiday weekend security alert – while at the same time, you have some opportunities with your elected officials. Also, most don’t blink at getting a little sun burn, and some even favor a good, solid tan. But too much sun can be bad for your health. And four states are considering changes to the rules for left lanes – but they’re not targeting trucks. They’re after the slow pokes.

Segment 1

Newscast

  • The FMCSA has launched a new public awareness campaign featuring videos of truckers, bus drivers and others talking about safety on the road. The program is called Our Roads, Our Safety and among those featured is OOIDA board member Dick Pingel. You can find out more about the campaign and see the videos here.
  • OOIDA’s TRACER system has issued an alert on a stolen truck. The white 2011 Freightliner conventional has “Unity Transportation Service” written on its sides. It was last seen on U.S. 90 in Avondale, La. A $500 reward is offered for information leading to its recovery.
  • Starting July 11, Jon Osburn and OOIDA’s tour truck, the Spirit of the American Trucker, will be at the Walcott Truckers Jamboree. That takes place at the Iowa 80 Truck Stop. Stop in, say hi to Jon and Sassi, and join OOIDA for a $10 discount. See the full Spirit Schedule.

Segment 2

Most don’t blink at getting a little sunburn, and some even favor a good, solid tan. But too much sun can be bad for your health. Mark Reddig gets some advice from Bob Perry of Health in Transportation.

  • You can call Bob at 602-692-2734.

Segment 3

Revisions to left-lane use rules continue to be made at statehouses around the country. Mark Reddig finds out about the latest efforts regarding left lane use from OOIDA’s Mike Matousek and Land Line Magazine’s Keith Goble.

Segment 4

Federal security officials have sent out a message to transportation officials nationwide about the Fourth of July weekend. Mark Reddig covers that – plus some holiday weekend opportunities – with OOIDA Director of Safety and Security Operations Doug Morris.

  • Normally, the TSA recommends that people who see something that “doesn’t look right” – not a clear emergency, but odd behavior, to call the TSA First Observer hotline. However, they are concerned enough about the holiday weekend that they are asking truckers who see things to call 911 directly.
  • Normally, and after the holiday weekend, if you see odd behavior – for example, someone slowly driving several times by a warehouse, or someone taking too many photos of a bridge – call the TSA First Observer hotline at 844-TSA-FRST (844-872-3778).
  • It’s never too late to share your views with lawmakers. You can do that at FightingForTruckers.com.
  • To call members of Congress, dial 202-224-3121.
