Weight restrictions at I-45/I-20 interchange near Dallas

Truckers driving on Interstate 45 or Interstate 20 south of Dallas need to check their vehicle’s weight. The Texas Department of Transportation has installed weight restrictions on three connector ramps until much needed repairs are made.

On April 19, TxDOT announced that weight limits are in place on three of the four direct connector ramps at the interchanges of I-45 at I-20 south of Dallas. Weight limits include 20,000 pounds per axle and 34,000 pounds for tandem vehicles. A gross vehicle weight restriction will not be imposed.

According to a TxDOT news release, the following vehicles are included in the restrictions:

• All permit loads.
• Mobile cranes.
• Concrete trucks.
• Recycle trucks.
• Container trucks.
• EV class of fire engines (typically only used at airports).
• Well service trucks.

Affected direct connector ramps that will be closed for two weeks include:

• I-45 northbound to I-20 westbound.
• I-45 northbound to I-20 eastbound.
• I-20 westbound to I-45 southbound.

The Dallas County Overweight Enforcement Unit will be out in full force issuing citations and fines for those violating the weight restrictions.

According to a TxDOT spokesperson, a contract for the project is expected to be awarded in June and could last for approximately 9-12 weeks once work begins. Weight limits will be lifted once ramp repairs are complete.
