The same snow storm system that hit Oregon earlier this week is now causing havoc in Idaho, forcing numerous road closures and stranding about a dozen vehicles on Highway 20 near Island Park.

Fremont County Sheriff Len Humphries told Land Line Now about eight trucks and four cars were stuck on the highway after it closed Sunday because of the snow. Ongoing snow and winds made it difficult for plows to get in and clear off the road.

Humphries says volunteers from his department brought in food, fuel and other supplies to the stranded while they waited. The road was finally cleared Tuesday night, and by Wednesday morning, all of the vehicles were safely evacuated.

Highway 20 is still closed, along with several other area roads, with another eight inches of snow expected today. Humphries says his advice for anyone heading into the area is don’t ignore the warnings.

“You know, I would just encourage them to not go around the road closed signs, that was the case here. We’d ask them to think twice before they do that,” Humphries said.
