Time is almost up for truck owners to pay the federal highway use tax for heavy vehicles. It’s that $550 fee you pay each year when you file an IRS Form 2290.

The deadline was Aug. 31, but, because of the Labor Day holiday, the IRS extended the deadline until Tuesday, Sept. 3. As long as the filing is in by midnight on Sept. 3, the 2290 will be considered on time. After that, penalties and interest will accrue.

OOIDA’s Permits and Licensing Department can assist truck owners with filing a 2290. Truck owners also can go here to process the 2290 electronically on their own.
