Extended rest area closures were recently announced by transportation officials in Indiana, Missouri, New Mexico and South Dakota.

Chamberlin, S.D.

More than $300,000 is being spent to improve the rest area on Interstate 90 in Chamberlin. The South Dakota Department of Transportation said truck parking as well as access to the Dignity statue will still be available during the closure.

Work is expected to be completed in April 2025.

Booneville, Mo.

Both rest area facilities on Interstate 70 at mile marker 104 in Cooper County will remain closed for several months, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Truck parking will remain open, but no facilities will be available.

Improved access, remodeled buildings and additional interior amenities will be among the upgrades. MoDOT said the work is expected to be completed in the spring of 2026, weather permitting.

Signs and barricades will be in place during the closures.

Torrance County, N.M.

$20 million is being invested in the Rattlesnake rest areas on both sides Interstate 40 (mile marker 207, 208) that will keep the facility closed for 300 calendar days, the New Mexico Department of Transportation said.

The facility will be demolished, and two new 2,850-square-foot rest areas are being built. Parking, picnic shelters and the water and sewer system are all being upgraded.

Wayne County, Ind.

The Centerville welcome center on I-70 is scheduled to close on Feb. 3 for a two-year renovation project.

This renovation is part of the Indiana Department of Transportation’s welcome center and rest area improvement plan that began in 2019.

Interactive exhibits, a recreation area, a dog park and 200-plus parking spots (156 for truck parking) will be added. Trucker restroom facilities and vending options will also be improved.

INDOT is anticipating a reopening of the Centerville rest area in 2027 and encourages travelers to utilize the Greenfield rest area at mile marker 107 in the meantime. LL
