Traffic came to a standstill in many locations throughout the Southeast as snow, ice and gusty winds from winter storm Enzo shut down several major highways.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said its plow teams were working through the night to clear snow and ice from highways in the east-central region of the state.

As of the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 22, GDOT was still advising motorists to avoid travel, particularly south and east of Interstate 85 and south of Interstate 20.

According to the 511GA, portions of Interstates 16, 20, 475, 75, 85 and 95 remain closed.

Drivers in Louisiana are also being told not to travel unless necessary, as a sizable number of roads in the state are still closed, with over 7 inches of snow reported in some areas.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development listed more than 30 road closures, including Interstates 10, 12, 55, 110, 210 and 310 as well as U.S. Highway 90 and several state highways.

In northwest Florida, I-10 was also still closed due to heavy snow and icy roadways.

FMCSA’s regional emergency is effective through Jan. 31, while emergency orders in several states remain in place due to severe winter weather.

Ice and snow were also reported on roadways in the Houston area, with I-10 closed in both directions from the Texas-Louisiana border to Baton Rouge, La., the Texas DOT said.

Crews from El Paso, Dallas, Fort Worth, Abilene, Waco and San Angelo were continuing to clear roads and treat with brine. LL
