    The rates for vans and reefers are up, as are load to truck ratios. Also, truckers recently expressed their concerns about the proposed changes to the hours of service at a listening session held by FMCSA. The price of diesel is lower again for the eighth week running. And a new study takes a look at the impact of driver detention time.

    • The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Illinois Department of Transportation have scheduled two public meetings to gather public comments on the replacement of the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge between Wickliffe, Ky., and Cairo, Ill. The first meeting will be Monday, Sept. 9, at the Fort Jefferson Welcome Center in Wickliffe. The second one will take place Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Cairo High School in Cairo. Both meetings will run from 5 to 7 p.m. You can find more information online at The U.S. 51 bridge website.
    • The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is warning truckers of an increase in scam letters asking trucking companies to pay to file their DOT biennial updates. The DOT says these companies are not affiliated with the U.S. or Wisconsin departments of transportation. The letters often include threats of fines for failure to pay. Filing your biennial report can be done for free on the FMCSA’s own website. If you have questions, you can also call OOIDA’s permits and licensing department at 800-444-5791.
    • Registration is now open for the second edition of OOIDA’s three-day class, “Truck to Success.” The class takes place Sept. 10-12 at the Courtyard by Marriott at Exit 21 off Interstate 70 in Blue Springs, Mo.
    • OOIDA has recognized John Redding of Marshalltown, Iowa, for 30 years of safe, accident-free driving as part of the OOIDA Safe Driving Award Program.

    At Dallas, truckers expressed their concerns and asked questions about the proposed changes to the hours-of-service regulations at a listening session held by the FMCSA. Mary McKenna will have some highlights from that two-hour session.
