The Missouri Department of Revenue recently applied for a renewal of a waiver that allows military veterans to receive a commercial learner’s permit without having to take a general knowledge test.

Missouri’s request to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration was posted to the Federal Register on Wednesday, Aug. 8.

Regulations require a driver to pass the general knowledge test before being issued a commercial learner’s permit. The exemption renewal would allow Missouri to continue to waive the knowledge test for qualified veterans.

The Missouri Department of Revenue said its goal is to help veterans find employment after returning to the civilian workforce. Missouri’s current exemption runs from Oct. 27, 2016 to Oct. 29, 2018. The state is requesting a two-year renewal.

FMCSA granted the previous exemption in October 2016.

Comments on the exemption request will be accepted through Sept. 7.
