Truckers Final Mile finds another way to honor truck drivers
Being a truck driver can feel like a thankless occupation at times.
Fortunately, there are organizations and initiatives that show those in the industry, as well as the general public, the importance of truck drivers and the trucking industry.
Truckers Final Mile has made its mission to serve truck drivers and their families in times of crisis.
The non-profit organization was formed in 2014 to reunite a truck driver and their family in the event of loss of life, debilitating injury, serious illness, a crisis at home or the need to improve mobility at a driver’s home.
Now, Truckers Final Mile has extended its efforts to establish a national truck driver memorial.
Robert Palm, founder and CEO of Truckers Final Mile, told Land Line that in researching the topic, he was unable to find any national memorial for truckers.
Previously, Truckers Final Mile created the “American Heritage Memorial,” a wrapped trailer utilized as a fundraising tool during the COVID-19 pandemic when truck shows and other events were canceled or postponed.
This truck memorial was recognized as a CAT Scale collector card in 2023.
Palm said the latest truck driver memorial effort is still in the early stages. Still, an online domain has been secured and design plans have been initiated.
“We are in talks to acquire a property and are in search of a minimum five-acre site with interstate frontage,” Palm said.
The goal is to break ground on the national truck driver memorial in May 2026, according to Palm. If that happens, Palm anticipates a ribbon-cutting ceremony could take place in September 2028.
Palm added that there will likely be a fundraising effort to support its national truck driver memorial, and a design competition could be held as well.
Truckers Final Mile will provide more information about this project as it becomes available.
Palm has firsthand experience with the reality of what can happen when a truck driver passes away hundreds or even thousands of miles away from home. In establishing Truckers Final Mile, the longtime trucker and military veteran said he knew there had to be a better way to help truck drivers’ families in times of crisis. LL
