  • Truck To Success set for Oct. 22-24

    June 01, 2024 |

Running a business is often a matter of trial and error. Wouldn’t it be nice to eliminate or at least minimize that “error” part? OOIDA created its Truck To Success training course for owner-operators as well as those interested in becoming an owner-operator to provide a blueprint to running a profitable trucking business.

The three-day course will walk attendees through developing a business plan, permits and licensing, insurance, drug and alcohol testing requirements, brokers and factoring, taxes and more.

The cost to attend Truck To Success is $495, which includes breakfast, lunch and snacks. Anyone who registers before Sept. 1 will receive $50 off that price, as well as a one-year OOIDA membership.

The deadline to register for the in-person version of the course is Oct. 1.

For those unable to attend in person, Truck To Success will be offered via Zoom for $250. Online attendees will receive access to the course presentation for three months. The deadline to register for the virtual training is Oct. 21.

But you really should make every effort to be in attendance at the Courtyard by Marriott in Blue Springs, Mo., OOIDA Executive Vice President Lewie Pugh said.

“If you are thinking about becoming an owner-operator or struggling as an owner-operator, you need to join us at this year’s Truck To Success,” Pugh said. “Truck To Success in person is always the best due to the amount of networking you get to be involved in.”

Another benefit to attending in person is receiving access for one year to video recordings of the courses taught.

“I know on the surface that missing a few days of work and paying for the course, motel and travel is a significant cost for sure,” Pugh said. “But you are about to embark on the most expensive decision of your life. A business where over 30% fail by the end of the first year and well over 50% after year five. This is an opportunity to arm yourself with knowledge to get ahead of the curve and be successful. It will show you what you really have to do to become a successful owner-operator.”

Previous attendees have touted the benefits of Truck To Success.

“They really give you the knowledge of what to expect as far as the cost and being prepared for that cost,” Meshell Barber, co-owner of Independence, Mo.-based Rick Barber Trucking LLC, told Land Line in 2022.

Juan Mendoza, a 2021 attendee, said the valuable tax advice was what motivated him to attend.

“Lowering my taxes was something I need help with, and I want to get some drivers to drive for me,” Mendoza said. “I’m going to make an investment, and I want to do it right.”

Andrew King, assistant director of the OOIDA Foundation and a presenter at Truck To Success, described the class as a one-stop shop.

“There’s so much required of an owner-operator,” King said. “This course will help you navigate all the regulations without being overwhelmed. Drivers can expect to hear from industry experts who deal with this sort of thing on a daily basis.”
