    The Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries declared an oil embargo against the United States. The embargo was devastating to truck drivers, leading many to go on a strike. The events led to the formation of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

    The independent film “Trucker” is released. The movie, starring Michelle Monaghan, is about a truck driver who is reunited with her 11-year-old son.

    During OOIDA’s fall board of directors meetings, the board members said that the then-looming ELD mandate, a proposed speed limiter mandate, and hours-of-service regulations were among the top concerns facing OOIDA members.

    Oct. 10, 2018

    OOIDA Executive Vice President Lewie Pugh attended FMCSA’s public listening session on its advance notice of proposed rulemaking regarding hours-of-service regulations. Pugh told FMCSA leaders that the way to improved safety is by giving truck drivers more flexibility within the rules.
