  • The wishes keep rolling

    March 01, 2024 |

A tradition over three decades old is gearing up for another year of supporting a great cause.

Now in its 35th year, the 2024 Mother’s Day Truck Convoy to benefit Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley is planned for May 12 at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction in Manheim, Pa.

The annual convoy raises money to assist the organization in granting the wishes of children in the area who are battling critical illnesses. In addition to driving in the convoy, truckers also compete to raise funds throughout the year.

In 2023, just shy of 400 trucks drove the 26-mile convoy route from Manheim to Mount Joy, a number that organizers hope to match or best for this year’s event.

“The truck drivers who support the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy are the backbone of the event,” Lori Dietrich, development director for Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, told Land Line. “They collectively raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and selflessly give of their time and resources to make the truck convoy happen.”

According to Dietrich, the money raised from the convoy is used to fund nearly 75% of the wishes her chapter grants each year. She said around 100 children currently are waiting for the organization to grant their wish.

This year, organizers hope to raise roughly $595,000 to make those wishes come true.

The day will kick off with a carnival that includes clowns, food trucks, an auction and more. With the convoy reaching a milestone anniversary, Dietrich said there will be a “special proclamation” along with some special guests and other surprises.

To make the event special for the Make-A-Wish kids, a few are chosen to give the signal for the trucks to start their engines. Others have a slightly better view of the convoy – riding shotgun in one of the trucks.

In fact, Dietrich said that many of the drivers form “lifelong bonds” with the kids and families they are paired with during the convoy. She added that it’s vital for a new crop of truckers to pick up that mantel.

“As times change and many of our longtime drivers hit retirement, it is more important than ever for new drivers to get involved in this important cause,” she said.

Drivers are encouraged to register early to start raising funds for their campaign. Sponsorships are also available. Visit WishConvoy.org for more information or to register for the convoy. LL
