Truck parking has been an uphill battle at the local level, as residents and city officials underestimate the value of more spaces. As you’ll see in one recent case, a little advocacy and education can go a long way.

Truck parking facility opens after help from OOIDA

Last year, Land Line published a story about a developer who reached out to the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association for help getting a truck parking facility. Great news: Everything worked out, and the parking facility is open! SafeStop is located at 725 E. Wintergreen Road in Hutchins, Texas, right off of Interstate 45. Unlike many paid parking facilities, this one includes clean restrooms, free showers, healthy vending options, a lounge area with free Wi-Fi and an on-site dog park. Oh, and 140 truck parking spaces.

North Carolina town gets another Sheetz

Mebane, N.C., located off Interstate 40 between Greensboro and Durham, will have two Sheetz. Unlike the first location, the newest Sheetz includes services for tractor-trailers, including five diesel pumps and a few dozen truck parking places.

Travel center proposed southwest of Chicago

Developers are looking to build a travel center in Morris, Ill., which is located about 65 miles southwest of Chicago and 24 miles southwest of Joliet right along Interstate 80. Plans are still preliminary, but overnight truck parking was definitely part of the early proposals. Joliet has been the center of controversy when it comes to truck parking, mentioned more than a dozen times in The Parking Zone, so maybe a travel center just outside the city will alleviate any parking pains in the region.

Circle K truck stop opens in Illinois

Meanwhile, on the northwest outskirts of Chicago, Circle K has opened a new location with amenities for truck drivers. The new truck stop is located at 70 Airport Road in West Dundee, off of Interstate 90. In addition to truck repair, truck wash and office space, the new Circle K also has a 1,000-square-foot truck parking facility.

New Love’s under construction in Illinois

Not exactly close to Chicago but still in Illinois nonetheless, Love’s Travel Stop broke ground on a new location earlier this year. According to Shaw Local, the new truck stop will be located near the interchange of state Route 40 and Interstate 88. There will be overnight truck parking, though the exact number is unclear. What is clear is that the opening date is scheduled for July 23, so be on the lookout.

Long-term truck parking right outside Chicago

Semiyard, a paid truck parking facility company, has opened a location at 4701 W. 26th Street in Cicero, Ill., just a few miles west of Chicago between Interstate 290 and Interstate 55. More accurately, it’s an “industrial outdoor storage” facility for pretty much any large vehicle, including boats. Although parking is monthly, not daily, these facilities keep larger carriers’ trailers away from the free, public parking spaces, and open that up to you.

Tennessee addressing truck parking problem … kind of

In late April, the Tennessee Department of Transportation announced it is implementing a “truck parking pilot project.” More parking spaces? Nope. Instead, Tennessee is installing a parking availability system at the welcome center on Interstate 40 in Smith County. The technology will monitor individual spots and let truckers know down the road how many spots are open.

“By giving drivers early, reliable information through these innovative solutions, we help them make smarter decisions,” TDOT Commissioner Will Reid said in a statement. “Our goal is simple: to support the men and women who keep our freight moving, while protecting everyone who uses Tennessee roadways.”

There may not be more parking now, but the information gleaned from this system could give policymakers the data they need to build more in the area. Fingers crossed.

Canadian city taking care of business

Truck parking is a problem in Canada as well. In Richmond, British Columbia, the city has launched a pilot program allowing overnight truck parking in designated areas. About 65 on-street parking spaces will be available from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. There’s a catch: Parking is limited to Richmond-based owners or operators who must purchase a permit and register with the city. While the pilot program takes care of local truckers, data from the program could lead to a longer-term truck parking program.

New major truck stops

Love’s Travel Stops and TravelCenters of America have opened several new truck stops in recent months, adding more than 600 truck parking spots to the nation’s infrastructure. As of mid-April, Love’s alone has added more than 500 spaces this year.
