  • OOIDA on the road – December 2022/January 2023

    December 01, 2022 |

It would have been surprising if the past year hadn’t been one full of surprises, what with the pandemic, severe weather and tech advances.

We are living in a tumultuous time. Beyond the big issues, every driver has their own list from their particular perspective about what they never imagined would happen this past year but did. Everyone’s list is a little different.

Marty Ellis, who drives the OOIDA tour trailer, has compiled a list of things he didn’t see coming but happened in the past year.

He has been driving the Spirit of the American Trucker trailer for a couple of years now, having been a company driver for almost 27 years before that. One thing he has learned is that he enjoys more than he thought he would talking to so many OOIDA members who are doing so many different things in trucking.

Things from the past year that Marty didn’t see coming:

    • That there would be so many smaller truck shows pop up this past year.
    • That we’d see fuel prices go so high and freight would go so low.
    • Him getting so fussy on how the truck looks. (There are a whole lot more truck washes in his life now.)
    • That no matter the parking lot, there will be dust
    • That so many truck stops wouldn’t open up their full-service restaurants.
    • He would get OOIDA’s executive vice president out to work on the trailer.
    • Having to disappoint people when he can’t get over to their event or area.
    • Taking so many pictures.
    • Working in an office – the saving grace is it has wheels and he can still drive around the country.
    • Him being on the radio on a regular basis.
    • Him needing a laptop anymore or sending so many emails. LL
