OOIDA Board of Director nominations sought
One thing about trucking and truck drivers is the diversity. All walks of life, all ages, all types of operations are unique. That brings fresh perspectives to policy conversations.
The nomination period for seats on the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Board of Directors is now open.
“In the words of Uncle Sam, ‘We want YOU!’ The Board relies on new and different perspectives. That is what has made OOIDA so powerful over the years. Not only do we have truckers in all different segments in the industry who share their personal perspectives and opinions, we come from all different walks of life,” OOIDA Executive Vice President Lewie Pugh said.
“What we really need are truckers who want to work together for a greater good to protect trucking as a way of life and a career – people invested in being successful either as a company driver or owner-operator.”
One of the most unique aspects of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association is that it is governed by truck drivers. That leadership drives OOIDA’s agenda on real-world trucking matters, with real-life experiences shaping the Association’s position on any given issue.
“It is important for OOIDA members to run for the Board of Directors to ensure the organization is led by active, experienced truckers who truly understand the challenges of the road. Member leadership keeps OOIDA grounded in its mission to protect driver rights, promote fair regulations, and strengthen the voice of professional truckers,” said Bryan Spoon, chairman of the OOIDA Nominations Committee.
Being on the Board can be far more effective than having a great idea that you post to social media and doesn’t go anywhere.
“I ran for the Board because I believe to see things change, you have to get involved. The OOIDA board of directors is made up of CDL holders who live and breathe this industry, we want to make it all it can be by advocating for proactive changes,” said Johanne Couture, OOIDA board member.
Nomination forms were sent to OOIDA members on Nov. 15, signaling the start of the biennial election cycle for alternate board members. The election will take place in the fall of 2026. Those elected will be seated at the 2027 spring board meeting.
What is the role of an alternate?
Alternate members of the OOIDA Board of Directors attend and actively participate in all Board meetings. When a director is unavailable to attend, an alternate is appointed to vote on issues in the director’s place.
Alternates, as well as directors, are routinely called on to represent the Association at various hearings, events and meetings.
Directors serve four-year terms. When a director’s term is about to expire, they must communicate the intention to seek re-election. It is during those elections that alternates have an opportunity to run against directors seeking re-election. All directors and alternates cast ballots during these elections.
There is no limit on how many terms an OOIDA member can serve as an alternate. However, the bylaws limit alternates to serving only two consecutive terms.
Here’s how it works?
The nomination-election committee has mailed nomination forms to all current dues-paying members. The nomination forms are also available online. Nominations close Dec. 31. If you are a member and not yet registered on the website, send an email to WebSupport@OOIDA.com to sign up.
OOIDA members can nominate themselves or another member. To run, a nominee must have a minimum of five consecutive years of commercial truck driving experience and five consecutive years of active Association membership immediately before the nomination.
After the deadline, the Nomination Election Committee will verify the minimum qualifications and send out questionnaires requesting more detailed information. Successful candidates will be placed on the election ballots. LL
