Lucky No. 17
Truckers for Troops is set to begin its 17th campaign on Nov. 6.
Since the start of this program, intended to support military personnel in combat zones, nearly $800,000 has been raised through the OOIDA-led fundraiser.
That dollar amount is substantial, but it’s the testimony of those on the receiving end of the generosity that shows the program’s true impact and speaks to its importance.
Recently, a previous recipient of a care package sent by Truckers for Troops reached out to OOIDA to express gratitude and underscore just what it meant to him.
James McMillian, a Missouri native and command career counselor for the USS Bulkeley, said he greatly appreciated the delivery and that it was amazing to share the donations with the shop on the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
“The work is hard, and a gift from home can make all the difference,” McMillian said.
Following the 2022 fundraiser, Land Line spoke with Matt Stevens, who served in the National Guard and received a care package while deployed in Afghanistan.
“It really does boost your morale,” Stevens said. “The environment (overseas) is such a stressful environment. You’re kind of trapped on base, and you’re limited to what they offer. Those packages were something you always look forward to. You can’t help but smile.”
As the fundraising campaign has evolved, and with fewer military personnel stationed overseas, contributions now regularly are distributed to organizations closer to home. Namely, the Veterans Community Project’s Kansas City location.
Truckers for Troops has provided household goods for the tiny-house community operated by VCP-Kansas City, along with monetary donations used for services like VCP’s commissary day.
OOIDA employees and members of the Truckers for Troops committee even participated in a volunteer day where they assisted VCP staff with whatever odd jobs needed to be completed on a particular Saturday.
“When the co-founders named this organization, community was a critical component of it,” Chris Admire, executive director of VCP-Kansas City, told Land Line at last year’s check presentation. “This is what OOIDA is helping us do: deliver the services. It’s pretty awesome to have this relationship.”
During this year’s campaign and as part of its 50th anniversary, OOIDA is offering a two-year membership for $50 or a one-year membership at a discounted price of $35. Of those dues, 10% will go to the Truckers for Troops fund, and OOIDA will match that amount.
