  • Building a foundation

    October 01, 2022 |

As with most things, it’s important to start with a good foundation.

That’s exactly why the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association started its Truck to Success program. The goal of the three-day course is to set prospective owner-operators on the right path before they invest in the business. It also can serve as a great tune-up for veteran owner-operators seeking an edge.

“Becoming an owner-operator is a big step and is very challenging,” OOIDA Executive Vice President Lewie Pugh said. “Unfortunately, many fail in the first year for various reasons. However, it seems most come down to lack of preparation and knowledge. This is why we started this course because we want to see all truckers succeed. Our course will give you the knowledge to make good, solid decisions on if you want to do this in the first place and all you need to know to get started.”

Over the course of three days, participants will receive in-depth guidance from industry experts on a variety of topics, including:

    • Developing a business plan
    • Equipment purchasing and financing
    • Insurance
    • Permits and licensing
    • Taxes
    • Brokers

This year’s course is scheduled for Oct. 25-27 in Blue Springs, Mo. For those who cannot attend in-person, virtual attendance will also be available. The price of admission varies, depending on your method of attendance. The in-person option includes breakfast, lunch and snacks.

Truck to Success features trainers, both from OOIDA and other trusted experts, who are in contact with owner-operators on a daily basis to bring you the most up-to-date information possible.

Andrew King, a research analyst with the OOIDA Foundation, says that both new and current owner-operators will find the course beneficial to their businesses.

“Truck to Success is designed to help individuals start off with a strong foundation,” King said. “However, it’s also meant to help those who are already owner-operators so that they can become more successful.”

The OOIDA Foundation’s mission statement is to fight for the rights of all truckers through education and research.

“Let us assist you on the road to success,” the OOIDA Foundation wrote on its website. “Whether you are a company driver or an owner-operator who is struggling to make ends meet and is looking for a refresher program, come join us.”
