Higher diesel fuel prices reign across the U.S.

A gallon of diesel fuel on average costs a few cents more in every region of the U.S. than a week ago, according to the federal EIA..

On Monday, Feb. 25, the EIA reported the U.S. average price for a gallon of diesel fuel was 4.2 cents higher than a week previous.

In the Midwest, the average price was 6.5 cents higher than the week previous. That was the largest increase among the regions reported by the EIA.

Monday’s average price is 4.1 cents higher than one year ago.

Following are the average prices by region as reported by the EIA for Monday:

• U.S. – $3.048, up 4.2 cents
• East Coast – $3.094, up 2.1 cents.
• New England – $3.171, up three-fifths of a cent.
• Central Atlantic – $3.286, up 3 cents.
• Lower Atlantic – $2.949, up 2.2 cents.
• Midwest – $2.969, up 6.5 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.849, up 4 cents.
• Rocky Mountain – $2.913, up 2.6 cents.
• West Coast – $3.493, up 3.5 cents.
• West Coast without California – $3.141, up 3.7 cents.
• California – $3.772, up 3.3 cents.

ProMiles reports the national average U.S. retail price for diesel on Monday, Feb. 25, went 5.7 cents.

ProMiles, the software company that maintains the websites ProMiles.com and TruckMiles.com, offers its own weekly fuel price information. The company’s fuel price data are presented in the same format used by the EIA in the agency’s weekly reports. The prices include a national average as well as regional averages, and comparisons to the previous week and the previous year.

A key difference between the EIA and ProMiles reporting is the type and number of fueling stations the company surveys in order to calculate its averages. While EIA surveys 400 truck stops and convenience stores nationwide, ProMiles uses its direct feed from thousands of truck stops to develop its averages.

The Midwest average diesel price went up 6.7 cents. In California, the average price went up 6.3 cents and the average for the Gulf Coast region went up 5.9 cents.

• U.S. – $2.932, up 5.7 cents.
• East Coast – $3.063, up 5.2 cents.
• New England – $3.141, up seven-tenths of a cent.
• Central Atlantic – $3.283, up 4.6 cents.
• Lower Atlantic – $2.938, up 5.9 cents.
• Midwest – $2.882, up 6.7 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.824, up 5.9 cents.
• Rocky Mountain – $2.888, up 2.7 cents.
• West Coast – $3.276, up 3.7 cents.
• West Coast less California – $3.038, up 2.7 cents.
• California – $3.672, up 6.3 cents.

AAA reported a national average price per gallon for diesel fuel at $2.971 for Monday, Feb. 25.

A week previous, the price was $2.929.

A month previous, AAA reported $2.925 per gallon of diesel fuel and a year ago $2.957 per gallon.

The highest recorded average price for diesel was $4.845 per gallon on July 17, 2008, according to AAA.
