ELECTION 2018: Los Angeles-area roads to benefit from sales tax questions

Fall ballots in California’s largest county will include questions to raise more than $110 million annually for local uses that include transportation purposes.

In Los Angeles County, voters in the city of Burbank will decide whether to collect a three-quarters cent sales tax to fund “any governmental purpose.” The tax would raise about $20 million annually.

The city of 104,000 does not have a local sales tax.

Passage of Measure P would enact a local sales tax to benefit projects that include street/pothole repair, efforts to reduce traffic congestion, and earthquake retrofitting city bridges.

Voters would need to approve a measure to end collection of the tax.

In the neighboring city of Glendale, ballots will include a question to enact a three-quarters cent sales tax to fund general city purposes.

Collection of the tax would raise $30 million annually for projects that include street improvements in the community of 200,000 population.

Voters in the city of Pasadena also will decide on a three-quarters cent sales tax question to benefit general city services.

Measure I on the local ballot would pay for projects that include road maintenance.

Voters in the city of 142,000 would need to approve a measure to end collection of the tax that is estimated to raise $21 million each year.

The ballot in the city of Covina will include a question to raise the local sales tax by three-quarters cent to fund general city services.

Measure CC would raise $5.1 million annually for work that includes fixing potholes/streets. There is no sunset date on collection of the additional tax.

Ballots in the Culver City will include a measure to increase the local sales tax by one-quarter cent for general city purposes.

Measure C is estimated to raise $4.9 million each year for local coffers that include street maintenance.

Voters would need to approve a measure to end collection of the additional tax.

The city of Pomona will have a question on the local ballot to raise $12 million annually via a three-quarters cent sales tax.

The tax increase in the city of nearly 150,000 would be used for projects that include improving streets.

Measure PG specifies that collection of the additional tax would sunset in 10 years.

The ballot in the city of San Fernando will include a question to renew the local half-cent sales tax to fund general city purposes.

Measure A would continue to raise nearly $2 million each year to fund projects that include street repairs.

The tax would not be collected on purchases that include prescriptions and certain grocery items.

The current half-cent sales tax is set to expire Oct. 1, 2020. The measure does not include an expiration date for the tax collection.

Ballots in the city of Santa Fe Springs will include a question to enact a 1 percent general sales tax.

Passage of Measure Y would raise $12.8 million annually to be used for projects that include street repairs and improvements.

Voters in the cities of Cudahy and La Puente will also decide on sales tax questions to raise $750,000 and $1.5 million annually respectively for projects that include roads.
