For the third week in a row, the average price for a gallon of diesel across the U.S. has dropped, according to the weekly report issued for Monday, June 10, by the Energy Information Administration.

The U.S. average price for diesel dropped 3.1 cents. It is 16.1 cents lower than a year ago.

Two regions have diesel prices of less than $3 per gallon: the Lower Atlantic and Gulf Coast.

The largest decreases were in California (5.1 cents per gallon) and the Rocky Mountain region (4.9 cents).

Following are the average prices for diesel fuel by region as reported by the EIA for Monday:

  • U.S. – $3.105, down 3.1 cents.
  • East Coast – $3.125, down 2.8 cents.
  • New England – $3.185, down 3.4 cents.

The national average U.S. retail price for diesel fuel on Monday, June 10, dropped 3.2 cents from the previous week, according to ProMiles.

ProMiles, the software company that maintains the websites ProMiles.com and TruckMiles.com, offers its own weekly fuel price information. The company’s fuel price data are presented in the same format used by the EIA in the agency’s weekly reports. The prices include a national average as well as regional averages, and comparisons to the previous week and the previous year.

A key difference between the EIA and ProMiles reporting is the type and number of fueling stations the company surveys in order to calculate its averages. While EIA surveys 400 truck stops and convenience stores nationwide, ProMiles uses its direct feed from thousands of truck stops to develop its averages.

Decreases in all regions brought the average retail price for a gallon of diesel under $3 in the Lower Atlantic, Midwest and Gulf Coast regions. California’s average price ducked just under the $4 per gallon line.

Regional average decreases ranged from 2.5 cent in New England and the Lower Atlantic to 6 cents in California.

Following are the average prices by region as reported by the ProMiles.com:

  • U.S. – $3.016, down 3.2 cents.
  • East Coast – $3.10, down 2.6 cents.
  • New England – $3.146, down 2.5 cents.
