Diesel price increases by a penny across the U.S.

The average price for a gallon of diesel fuel across the U.S. is up a penny from a week ago, according to the federal Energy Information Administration.

According to the EIA’s Monday, March 25, report, the price is 7 cents higher than a year ago.

The largest increase for the week was in California, where the per-gallon price went up 3.8 cents. The price in Rocky Mountain states went up 3 cents.

Following are the average prices by region as reported by the EIA for Monday:

• U.S. – $3.08, up 1 cent.
• East Coast – $3.132, up four-fifths of a cent.
• New England – $3.214, up 1.4 cents.
• Central Atlantic – $3.31, down three-tenths of a cent.
• Lower Atlantic – $2.995, up 1.4 cents.
• Midwest – $2.993, up one-tenth of a cent.
• Gulf Coast – $2.876, up seven-tenths of a cent.
• Rocky Mountain – $2.974, up 3 cents.
• West Coast – $3.526, up 2.9 cents.
• West Coast without California – $3.156, up 1.7 cents.
• California – $3.819, up 3.8 cents.

ProMiles reports little change in the national average U.S. retail price for diesel fuel on Monday, March 25, from a week before.

ProMiles, the software company that maintains the websites ProMiles.com and TruckMiles.com, offers its own weekly fuel price information. The company’s fuel price data are presented in the same format used by the EIA in the agency’s weekly reports. The prices include a national average as well as regional averages, and comparisons to the previous week and the previous year.

A key difference between the EIA and ProMiles reporting is the type and number of fueling stations the company surveys in order to calculate its averages. While EIA surveys 400 truck stops and convenience stores nationwide, ProMiles uses its direct feed from thousands of truck stops to develop its averages.

Following are the average prices by region as reported by the ProMiles.com:

• U.S. – $2.991, up one-fifth of a cent.
• East Coast – $3.091, up one-fifth of a cent.
• New England – $3.161, up 2.5 cents.
• Central Atlantic – $3.288, down three-tenths of a cent.
• Lower Atlantic – $2.973, up one-tenth of a cent.
• Midwest – $2.953, down one-fifth of a cent.
• Gulf Coast – $2.873, down one-fifth of a cent.
• Rocky Mountain – $2.957, up 3.4 cents.
• West Coast – $3.332, up 1.6 cents.
• West Coast less California – $3.064, up one-fifth of a cent.
• California – $3.698, up 1.8 cents.

AAA reported a national average price per gallon for diesel fuel at $3.021 for Monday, March 25.

A week previous, the price was $3.013.

A month previous, AAA reported $2.971 per gallon of diesel fuel and a year ago $2.942 per gallon.

The highest recorded average price for diesel was $4.845 per gallon on July 17, 2008, according to AAA.
