Average price for diesel across U.S. sits tight for a week

The U.S. average price for a gallon of diesel remains exactly the same as a week ago, according to the federal Energy Information Administration.

On Monday, Feb. 11, the EIA reported the average price for a gallon of diesel across the U.S. was $2.966 per gallon. The price is 9.7 cents lower than the price one year ago.

This is the fifth consecutive week that the price has been under $3 per gallon.

Following are the average prices by region as reported by the EIA for Monday:

• U.S. – $2.966, no change
• East Coast – $3.031, down seven-tenths of a cent.
• New England – $3.161, down 1.5 cents.
• Central Atlantic – $3.225, down one-fifth of a cent.
• Lower Atlantic – $2.872, down seven-tenths of a cent.
• Midwest – $2.849, up 1 cens.
• Gulf Coast – $2.776, down three-tenths of a cent.
• Rocky Mountain – $2.87, 1.3 cents.
• West Coast – $3.435, no change.
• West Coast without California – $3.084, down three-tenths of a cent.
• California – $3.714, up three-tenths of a cent.

ProMiles reports national average U.S. retail price for diesel on Monday, Feb. 11, went up a bit less than one cent.

ProMiles, the software company that maintains the websites ProMiles.com and TruckMiles.com, offers its own weekly fuel price information. The company’s fuel price data are presented in the same format used by the EIA in the agency’s weekly reports. The prices include a national average as well as regional averages, and comparisons to the previous week and the previous year.

A key difference between the EIA and ProMiles reporting is the type and number of fueling stations the company surveys in order to calculate its averages. While EIA surveys 400 truck stops and convenience stores nationwide, ProMiles uses its direct feed from thousands of truck stops to develop its averages.

A year ago, the U.S. average price was 14.6 cents higher, according to ProMiles data. The week before the gap was 17.4 cents.

• U.S. – $2.868, up four-fifths of a cent.
• East Coast – $3.004, down three-tenths of a cent.
• New England – $3.144, down 1.8 cents.
• Central Atlantic – $3.229, up three-tenths of a cent.
• Lower Atlantic – $2.868, down seven-tenths of a cent.
• Midwest – $2.803, up 1.8 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.757, down seven tenths of a cent.
• Rocky Mountain – $2.873, down 2.1 cents.
• West Coast – $3.239, down 1.2 cents.
• West Coast less California – $3.013, down 1.7 cents.
• California – $3.616, up two-fifths of a 1.5 cent.

AAA reports a national average price per gallon for diesel fuel at $2.916 for Monday, Feb. 11.

A week previous, the price was $2.917.

A month previous, AAA reported $2.941 per gallon of diesel fuel and a year ago $2.992 per gallon.

The highest recorded average price for diesel was $4.845 per gallon on July 17, 2008, according to AAA.
