Average diesel fuel price decreases for 13th week, federal agency reports

The U.S. average price for a gallon of diesel reported by the federal Energy Information Administration fuel has decreased for 13 weeks straight.

On Monday, Jan. 14, the EIA reported the average price for a gallon of diesel across the U.S. dipped below $3 per gallon. The price is 5.2 cents lower than the price one year ago.

Following are the average prices by region as reported by the EIA for Monday:

• U.S. – $2.976, down 3.7 cents.
• East Coast – $3.049, down 2 cents.
• New England – $3.208, down four-fifths of a cent.
• Central Atlantic – $3.217, down 2.5 cents.
• Lower Atlantic – $2.903, down 4.4 cents.
• Midwest – $2.869, down 1.8 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.788, down 3.3 cents.
• Rocky Mountain – $2.987, 3.9 cents.
• West Coast – $3.471, down 5.7 cents.
• West Coast without California – $3.13, down 5 cents.
• California – $3.742, down 6.3 cents.

As reported yesterday, ProMiles reports national average U.S. retail price for diesel on Monday, Jan. 14, dropping 3.6 cents from the week previous to $2.886 per gallon.

ProMiles, the software company that maintains the websites ProMiles.com and TruckMiles.com, offers its own weekly fuel price information. The company’s fuel price data are presented in the same format used by the EIA in the agency’s weekly reports. The prices include a national average as well as regional averages, and comparisons to the previous week and the previous year.

A key difference between the EIA and ProMiles reporting is the type and number of fueling stations the company surveys in order to calculate its averages. While EIA surveys 400 truck stops and convenience stores nationwide, ProMiles uses its direct feed from thousands of truck stops to develop its averages.

• East Coast – $3.011, down 2.9 cents.
• New England – $3.176, down 2.5 cents.
• Central Atlantic – $3.259, down 2.7 cents.

• Midwest – $2.796, down 4.1 cents.
• Gulf Coast – $2.781, down 2.7 cents.
• Rocky Mountain – $2.996, down 4.6 cents.
• West Coast – $3.304, down 4.1 cents.
• West Coast less California – $3.092, down 5.2 cents.
• California – $3.635, down 3 cents.
